The study, which will be conducted as a single-center, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at UPMC Shadyside, will explore aromatherapy’s potential to modulate perioperative anxiety.

In his project, Dr. Salavatian will investigate the neuronal interactions in the cardiac nervous system in the setting of cardiac disease and evaluate the efficacy of neuromodulation therapy in mitigating the adverse effect of cardiac pathology.

The project “AtTACC Pain” was one of three projects to receive $50,000 in the 2020 Pain Research Challenge.

Ajay D. Wasan, MD, MSc, received a Pitt Innovator Award from the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute on Nov. 20, 2019 for his group’s project "Personalized Pain Treatment."

Gregg E. Homanics, PhD, received a Pitt Innovator Award from the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute at their 14th annual Celebration of Innovation on November 20.

The project “BRIDGE Device: Alternative Postpartum Analgesia” was selected for funding by CTSI’s Research Initiative for Special Populations Pilot Program.

The goal of the center, under the directorship of Jacques E. Chelly, MD, PhD, MBA, is to develop research and implement new clinical services to assess the role that complementary and alternative medicine can play in care for surgical patients.

 Jacques E. Chelly, MD, PhD, MBA and collaborators signed a $250,000 agreement with the company PureForm Global to study the clinical analgesic properties of their cannabidiol cream.

Principal Investigators Aman Mahajan, MD, PhD, MBA; Gale Lucas, PhD; and Celine Tien received a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for their project “Opioid-sparing pain management for Chronic Low Back Pain patients using TMCCP01 - A Virtual Autonomic Neuromodulation Induced Systemic Healing-based Program.”

Researchers from UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh were awarded nine grants, including Dr. Wasan’s and Dr. Taylor’s projects, totaling more than $32 million to improve prevention and treatment strategies for opioid misuse and addiction and to enhance pain management.
