On September 14, the Department of Anesthesiology at UPMC Passavant hosted a Family Day event, offering staff and their families a behind-the-scenes look at the operating room environment. The event featured four interactive stations designed to educate and engage attendees of all ages.
Participants rotated through hands-on experiences, including an intubation tutorial, demonstrations of spinal surgery navigation and surgical microscopes, laparoscopic and robotic surgery simulations, and an intravenous medication administration simulation. The event provided a unique opportunity for families to better understand the clinical skills and technology integral to perioperative care.
The event was organized by Jessica A. Maritto, DNP, CRNA, with support from the Passavant Hospital Foundation and a dedicated team of volunteers, including student registered nurse anesthetists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, surgeons, medical device representatives, and administrators. This team effort contributed to fostering a strong sense of community, learning, and appreciation within the department.
Thank you to all of the organizers, volunteers, and participants — including our youngest friends who got the chance to see what it is their parents do at work, after all.
