UPMC Mercy CRNA Turns Pain Into Purpose

"Stephanie Waters poses in front of a screen with a slide reading Looking for Kindness"Stephanie A. Waters, MSN, CRNA, a nurse anesthetist at UPMC Mercy co-authored a children’s book in honor of her brother Kevin who passed away suddenly from encephalitis in January, aged 30.

Kevin Cavlovich, or “Mr. Kevin” as children referred to him, worked as a custodian at the Hosack Elementary School, part of the North Allegheny School District. Beloved by the community, Kevin shared his kindness day in and day out with students, teachers, and staff of the school. After his passing, the school honored him, and the children put together drawings to honor Kevin’s acts of kindness.

Inspired by this outpouring of support and gratitude, Stephanie and her mother Deb Cavlovich turned their pain into purpose and wrote a children's book in Kevin’s honor called "Looking for Kindness." This book and public readings as well as Kevin’s story were featured in several media outlets:

"A graphic cover of the book Looking for Kindness depicting many colorful pairs of glasses"Stephanie's book "Looking for Kindness" is available for purchase in paperback at AmazonBarnes & Noble, and other retailers. All profits from book sales are put into Kevin’s Kindness Campaign to continue to spread kindness in elementary schools in the Pittsburgh area.
