Congratulations to Ezeldeen Abuelkasem, MBBCh, MSc, FASE, who assumed the new leadership role of our department’s Director for Perioperative Echocardiography Education on November 1, 2022.
Dr. Abuelkasem is probably the only one candidate in the nation to achieve testamur status and certification in all the National Board of Echocardiography examinations (Basic Perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), Advanced Perioperative TEE, Critical Care Echocardiography, and Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography). His dedication to teaching is well known within our department. Dr. Abuelkasem’ s educational accomplishments include receiving the Leroy Harris Award for ‘’Excellence in Resident Teaching’’ for three consecutive years and creating an educational echocardiography database for teaching residents and fellows.
In Dr. Abuelkasem’ s new role, he will oversee our Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Division’s missions of education of our residents and faculty in basic TEE and point of care ultrasound and our adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows in advanced TEE, as well as conduct of Echocardiography Interdisciplinary Education Meetings, educational research related to perioperative echocardiography, and the perioperative echocardiography preceptorship for UPMC.
