ERP Basics

Why ERP?

The UPMC Enhanced Recovery Program has been proven to help patients recover from surgery faster and with less pain, with the use of minimal to no opioids postoperatively. Success is achieved by patient “prehabiliation” prior to surgery, in coordination with perioperative medications and techniques that result in shorter hospital stays and increased patient and family satisfaction.

Patient-centered Care

With ERP, the patient plays a vital role in their plan of care. Patients can improve their outcomes after surgery by increasing activity, quitting smoking, and following a carbohydrate-rich nutrition plan in the weeks leading up to surgery. In addition, patients will be asked to drink clear liquids up to three hours before their scheduled surgery start time, so that the body is filled with fluids, sugar, and electrolytes during surgery.
