Congratulations to our UPMC St. Margaret (STM) anesthesia team, led by chief anesthesiologist Jay Roskoph, MD, MBA, who won the 2019 STM Patient Safety Award for their success in decreasing the length of time patients getting knee replacement surgery (total knee arthroplasty – TKA) spent in the hospital over a one-year period. The team researched and developed a protocol to identify good candidates to be discharged home the day after surgery with nerve block pumps. Prior to this protocol, only two TKA patients had been discharged in such a manner. After starting the protocol, 248 TKA patients were discharged home the day after surgery while maintaining minimal opioid consumption, satisfactory pain scores, and no serious complications.
