The August 2025 issue of Current Opinion in Anesthesiology featured contributions from our liver transplant anesthesiology faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. Current Opinion in Anesthesiology is a review journal that provides a systematic and critical assessment of literature across the field, which is divided into 16 sections reviewed annually. Each section is curated by Section Editors, experts in the field, who select the most pertinent topics for review.
This issue spotlighted transplant anesthesiology, with two of its Section Editors from our department: Yaroslava Longhitano, MD, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor, UPMC Montefiore, and Raymond M. Planinsic, MD, FASA, Professor, Director of Transplant Anesthesiology and Transplant Quality Improvement at UPMC Presbyterian, and Director of our Hepatic Transplantation Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. Joining them as a Section Editor was Christian Zanza, MD, PhD, a freelance anesthesiologist and intensivist as well as emergency and internal medicine physician working across Italy and English-speaking countries in Europe and USA. Their photos and biographies were highlighted in the issue’s editorial introductions.
The transplant anesthesiology section included six articles authored by members of our department, showcasing their expertise and contributions to the field (department author names bolded):
