A Survey of United States Obstetric Anesthesiologists' Perceived Value of Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship,” published in the November 2023 issue of the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia, highlights the positive impact of obstetric anesthesiology (OB) fellowship training on the careers and well-being of OB anesthesiologists in the United States.

The article, co-authored by our Director of OB Anesthesia Education Tyler Smith, MD, conveys several key findings based on responses to a survey sent to US OB anesthesiology fellowship alumni:

  • Respondents perceived that OB anesthesiology fellowship training positively impacted their career trajectory, job satisfaction, quality of life, and job autonomy.
  • Most of the respondents believed that the fellowship was extremely beneficial and improved the quality of patient care. A significant number also reported enhanced job satisfaction and a sense of purpose.
  • OB anesthesiologists felt that the fellowship provided benefits like improved career prospects, a sense of community, reduced burnout, increased mentorship, and leadership opportunities.

The data confirms the importance of these critical OB anesthesia training programs, including our renowned UPMC OB Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. We also offer several OB anesthesiology fellowship pathways that intersect with other anesthesia subspecialties.
