Drs. Daniela Damian, Mihaela Visoiu, and Charles Yang Organize First Romanian Pediatric Anesthesia Workshop

"Headshots of Doctors Damian, Visoiu, and Yang"

Daniela Damian, MD; Mihaela Visoiu, MD; and Charles I. Yang, MD were invited speakers at the 17th International Course on Guidelines and Protocols in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Conference in Timisoara, Romania. The event is the largest anesthesia meeting in Romania and one of the most prestigious in Eastern Europe, attracting around 1,500 participants and a cadre of distinguished international lecturers. Invited US speakers from Boston, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Hershey and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania presented lectures.

The meeting primarily focuses on adult topics, but this year Dr. Damian was invited to organize a panel dedicated to pediatric anesthesia. As part of the panel, Dr. Visoiu presented the lecture “Organization, Function, and Implementation of an Acute Pediatric Pain Service” and Dr. Yang presented “An Anesthesiologist’s Approach to Challenging Pediatric Chronic Pain.”

Drs. Damian, Visoiu, and Yang also developed and directed a multi-station, hands-on workshop, “Ultrasound in the Perioperative Care of Pediatric Patients,” which received excellent reviews. The workshop covered select regional anesthesia techniques (caudal anesthesia, truncal blocks) and an integrated point-of-care ultrasound examination of the lung and heart to aid the management of shock. The organizers’ goal was to “plant a seed” and inspire local colleagues to incorporate these techniques into their daily anesthesia practice. Based on the positive feedback, they were invited to return next year with an additional list of requested topics.

Information about the meeting and photos from the workshop can be viewed in a PowerPoint presentation from Dr. Damian: Presentation (PDF). Workshop photos are also featured in a video on our YouTube channel.
