The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion celebrated 40 years of effort to prepare, recruit, and retain students underrepresented in medicine with special events on March 19 and 20, 2021. The contributions of Yan Xu, PhD, in mentoring these students were recognized at the special reception “The Office of Diversity Programs Celebrating 40 Years of Commitment, Collaboration, Innovation and Service, 1979-2019,” (March 20, 2021). The University’s recognition is a reflection of our department and our T32 program’s commitment and contribution to the university’s diversity efforts. Dr. Xu and Pei Tang, PhD, have mentored students over the last 25 years via the QUEST Undergraduate Research Program, the Jean Hamilton Walls Scholars Program, the NIH Diversity Supplement program, and the Pittsburgh Undergraduate Research Diversity Program (PURDiP). Students have gone on to successful careers in medicine, pharmacy, and other scientific fields.
