Dr. William McIvor Named Director of Medical Student Programs

Congratulations to William R. McIvor, MD, FASA, who has been named our new Director of Medical Student Programs, effective October 1, 2021. 

Dr. McIvor earned his BS from Beloit College and MD from the University of Wisconsin. He completed his anesthesiology residency at Maine Medical Center and completed additional clinical training in cardiac anesthesiology at UPMC. Dr. McIvor joined our department’s faculty in 1998 and is currently Professor of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine and Director of Medical Student Simulation Education at WISER. Dr. McIvor is passionate and enthusiastic about teaching; in his role at WISER, he has taught countless medical students, residents, fellows, and other practicing physicians over the years. He has won numerous teaching and mentorship awards from our department, the School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing, including the Donald S. Fraley Award, the Charles R. Watson Award, the Clinical Preceptor of the Year Award, the SRNA Class Best Clinical Instructor Award, and the Peter M. Winter Award for Medical Student Education. He is an inaugural member of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Academy of Master Educators based upon his sustained record of excellence and achievements in medical education.

In addition to welcoming and congratulating Dr. McIvor in his new role, we also express our gratitude to Dr. Shawn Beaman for his dedicated service as our outgoing Director of Medical Student Programs. We have appreciated his insight, educational expertise, and extraordinary efforts as he maintained our presence in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and fostered medical students’ interest in anesthesiology.
