"Doctor McHugh posing with award"

Congratulations to Richard McHugh, MD for his appointment to the rarely bestowed and renowned title of “Clinician Emeritus.” University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP) grants only one or two of these titles per year system-wide.

Dr. McHugh earned his BS in Biology from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. He completed his MD at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Residency and Fellowship in Anesthesiology at University of Virginia Medical Center. He worked on the anesthesia staff at Allegheny General Hospital for 24 years, as well as for a short time at Suburban General Hospital. Dr. McHugh first joined the faculty in our department in 1982 as a Clinical Instructor, a title he held until 1990. From 1994-2000, he served on the faculty of MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia as Assistant Professor. Dr. McHugh came back to our department in 2002 as a Clinical Assistant Professor. In 2010, he was appointed Operating Room Clinical Director at UPMC Presbyterian. In this role, he coordinated all surgical and procedural services and managed the daily OR schedule for Presby/Montefiore and served as a clinical liaison on the hospital’s Surgical Services Oversight Committee. He also served on Presby’s Quality Committee for 10 years.

Throughout his career with UPMC Anesthesiology, Dr. McHugh has won numerous clinical teaching awards. He was awarded the Anesthesiology Resident Clinical Teaching Award three times, in 2004, 2006, and 2008. He was also presented the Anesthesiology Dr. Leroy Harris Resident Clinical Teaching Award in 2010.

Dr. McHugh has been engaged with the community throughout his career. From 1993-2009, he served on the Board of Directors of Central Blood Bank, and from 1997-2001 and 2010-present served Pittsburgh’s Institute for Transfusion Medicine in various positions. He has been a member of the ASA, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Allegheny County Medical Society, and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists for most of his career.
