Dr. Mark Hudson Appointed UPMC Richard J. Kuwik Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology

Congratulations to Mark E. Hudson, MD, MBA, who has been appointed as the UPMC Richard J. Kuwik Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology by Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh Patrick Gallagher, effective May 1, 2018.

Appointment to a named professorship is one of the highest honors that any university can bestow upon a faculty member. Dr. Hudson’s appointment recognizes and rewards the quality and impact of his work, which has earned deep and widespread respect. It also expresses the University’s confidence that Dr. Hudson will continue to bring many additional accomplishments and contributions to the discipline of Anesthesiology, the University, and society.

Dr. Hudson has served the department for over 20 years in as an attending anesthesiologist, educator, clinical researcher, and administrative leader. He has and continues to be an active clinical anesthesiologist, is actively involved in all aspects of medical education, and is recognized as an innovative clinical expert. His administrative responsibilities have progressed throughout his career, starting with his first leadership role as Anesthesiology Chair and Chief at UPMC Shadyside and continuing to his current role as Executive Vice-Chair and Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations for the department.  Dr. Hudson also currently serves as Executive Director of Anesthesia Services for the UPMC Health System. In addition to his accomplishments in the department and at UPMC, his clinical research in the field of healthcare management, business, and economics has been recognized both nationally and internationally.

The endowed professorship is named in honor of Richard J. Kuwik, MD, former Chief of Anesthesiology at UPMC Mercy and an accomplished and respected 28-year physician and faculty member in our department who passed away in 2016. Dr. Kuwik had a tremendous impact on many physicians, nurses, and patients over his long career. The department established a Professorship in his honor through University of Pittsburgh Physicians in 2016.
