Dr. Jim Ibinson Appointed VAPHS Chief Anesthesiologist

"Headshot of Doctor Ibinson"

Congratulations to James W. Ibinson, MD, PhD, who was recently appointed Chief Anesthesiologist at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS), our Department of Veterans Affairs partner institution, after serving as interim chief at the site since June of 2019.

Dr. Ibinson has been a longtime member of our department. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2004 and his MD in 2006 from The Ohio State University as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. He then came to Pittsburgh to complete his anesthesiology residency with us in 2010 and was selected as Chief Resident. Jim went on to complete additional training in our T32 Research Training Fellowship. Since then, he has authored or co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts that have been cited more than 500 times, as well as many letters, communications, and book chapters.

Jim has been active in research, teaching, and mentorship, and has served in many departmental leadership roles, including chairing the Evaluation and Competence Committee for our residency program from 2017 until 2019. He has already made an impact while serving as Interim Chief Anesthesiologist at VAPHS in the areas of OR efficiency and offsite coverage and has been a leader in developing and overseeing the site’s COVID-19 response efforts.

We commend Dr. Ibinson for his appointment to this permanent Chief role and wish him the best in this leadership position.
