Dr. Dan Sullivan to Step Down from Passavant Chief Role July 1 to Focus on Safety and Quality

Daniel R. Sullivan, MD, JD, MBA, will step down from his role as Chief Anesthesiologist at UPMC Passavant to focus on his other roles as our department’s Patient Safety Officer and Quality Director at UPMC Passavant on July 1, 2021.

Dr. Sullivan has served impressively as a member of our faculty for over 20 years. He earned his MD at Jefferson Medical College and completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dan also holds a JD from the Duquesne University School of Law and an MBA from The Wharton School at Penn. Over the course of his career, he has worked at West Virginia University School of Medicine, St. Clair Hospital, and St. Francis Hospital, as well as at St. Margaret, Mercy, and Passavant before those hospitals came into the fold of our department and UPMC. As a lawyer, Dan previously ran a consulting/law practice focusing on health care, working with hospitals, physicians, physician groups, freestanding health care facilities, and biotechnical firms. He has been Chief of Anesthesiology at Passavant since 1996.

Dan served as a faculty member on our Anesthesiology Resident Patient Safety Committee and has taught numerous patient safety and quality improvement courses to our residents. He was the UPMC Passavant Administrative Official for all graduate medical education at Passavant, where over 200 residents, fellows, and students rotate annually. Dr. Sullivan serves as a member or leader of many committees and boards both inside and outside the hospital and health system, including as Secretary of the Passavant and St. Margaret Boards of Trustees and Chairman of the Passavant Foundation. Over the course of his career, Dr. Sullivan has also served in various roles for national organizations, including as a member of ASA Committees, as an Associate Examiner for the ABA, and as a site reviewer for the ACGME Residency Review Committee.

In his roles as the department’s Patient Safety Officer and Quality Director for UPMC Passavant, Dr. Sullivan serves as a physician advisor for numerous internal and external regulatory review bodies related to quality and patient safety. He also represents our department on various physician committees, advises staff and affiliates on risk and quality issues, and supports all hospital departments for process improvement and quality initiatives. Dan will continue in these roles after stepping down from his clinical responsibilities at Passavant.
