We were one of 33 sites nationwide selected to host 2021 Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellows (MSARF). FAER created the MSARF program to encourage talented medical students to consider careers in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine research. The summer fellowship provides medical students with an eight-week research experience within an academic anesthesiology department. During the fellowship, students participate in research, training, and clinical anesthesia activities. In addition, the students have the opportunity to present their scientific work at the 2021 American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting.

Chuhao Nie grew up in China and moved to Michigan in 2013. He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science and Psychology. He is currently a second-year medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He worked with Dr. Jonathan Waters on the project “Hemoclear: a Pilot Study Exploring the Utilization of the Red Blood Cell Salvage Device.” This research is an exploratory study to test the HemoClear, a gravity-based, single-use medical device, for its functions of filtrating and concentrating blood and its potential in reserve coagulation and platelet function. Chuhao will present his abstract at the FAER MSARF Symposium at Anesthesiology 2021.

Kelsea LaSorda is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and an alum of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. She is currently a second-year medical student at the Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. During her fellowship, she worked with her mentor Dr. Grace Lim on the project “Quantitative Psychosocial Correlates of Pain in Pregnant Women with Opioid Use Disorder.” Kelsea was involved with the recruitment, enrollment, and quantitative sensory testing of patients at UPMC Magee Womens Hospital and will present preliminary findings at the FAER MSARF Symposium at Anesthesiology 2021.
