We are sad to share the news that Dr. William Hetrick, our former faculty member and a leader in the field of anesthesiology, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

William D. Hetrick, MD, was born in Joplin, MO, and spent his formative years in Butler and Grove City, PA. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Grove City College in 1965 and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1969. Following completion of his anesthesiology residency at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh (now UPMC Mercy) in 1972, Dr. Hetrick dedicated two years to the Public Health Service in New Orleans, LA, before returning to Pittsburgh. He served as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Program Director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Mercy and was a Clinical Associate Professor in our department until his retirement in 2006.

Dr. Hetrick was highly regarded in the anesthesiology community, actively participating in many professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the International Anesthesia Research Society, and the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA). He served as a delegate in the ASA House of Delegates and was President of the PSA from 1987 to 1988. In recognition of his contributions, the PSA awarded him their Distinguished Service Award in 2004. Dr. Hetrick's prolific work led to many published papers in professional journals, and he contributed significantly as an examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology.
