We are saddened to announce the passing of Eva A. Safar, wife of our founding chair, Dr. Peter Safar. Her warmth, grace, and strength touched many across our community. Below is a message from her sons, Paul and Phil, sharing their memories and reflection.
In Loving Memory of Eva A. Safar
(1930 – 2025)
Dear Friends and Family,
On December 21, 2025—the Winter Solstice—Eva A. Safar (nee Kyzivat) passed away peacefully at her home in Eugene, Oregon, with her son Paul and his wife Nancy Wood by her side. Eva’s final days were surrounded by love from Paul, Nancy, devoted friends, and caregivers. Her son Phil was grateful to share time with her shortly before her passing.
Eva’s life was a tapestry of resilience, love, and curiosity. Born in Vienna, Austria on June 7, 1930. She grew up during the turmoil of World War II, experiences that shaped her strength and compassion. In 1950, she married the love of her life, Dr. Peter J. Safar, and together they embarked on a journey that spanned continents—first working in a blood bank in Lima, Peru and then upon their return to the United States, working and living in Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco—building a family and a life rich in culture and purpose rooted in Pittsburgh.
Eva was a woman of grace and intellect who embraced the arts and the world around her. She served as an art docent at the Carnegie Museum, shared her love of music by singing Lieder (classical art songs) with Peter during cherished house concerts, was a graceful ballroom dancer, traveled widely, always eager to learn and connect with those around her. After Peter’s passing in 2003, Eva moved to Eugene where she found joy in the university and arts community, cultivated deep friendships, and enjoyed the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Most of all, she delighted in being “Oma Eva” to her grandchildren, who brought her endless joy and hope for the future.
We are deeply grateful for the calls, messages, and memories shared about this kind, elegant, and extraordinary woman. Eva was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Elizabeth (1966), and her husband, Peter (2003). She is survived by her sons, Paul (Nancy Wood), and Phil (Linda Safar, deceased), and five grandchildren: Julian, Chloe, Katherine (Thai Rojanasthien), Anne, and Meryl Safar.
A celebration of Eva’s life will be held at a later date. In place of flowers, please consider donating to a charity that supports the arts, culture, nature conservation, or community outreach—causes close to Eva’s heart.
With gratitude,
Paul and Phil Safar
