Thank you for your interest in the Anesthesiology Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh. Beginning September 1, 2024, we will be accepting applications through ERAS for both PGY-1 positions beginning July 2025 and PGY-2 positions beginning July 2026. We do not have any positions available outside of the match at this time.
Our department utilizes the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please use this service to submit your application to our residency program. In addition to your ERAS application, please provide:
- A personal statement
- Three letters of reference
- A Dean's letter
- Transcripts
- USMLE scores
We encourage you to complete your ERAS application as early as possible, as completed applications are reviewed on a first come, first serve basis.
SUPPLEMENTAL ERAS APPLICATION
Starting with the 2023 ERAS cycle, we will collect and review data from applicants’ supplemental ERAS applications. Completion of the standard ERAS application is a requirement; completion of the supplemental ERAS application is optional. This voluntary supplemental application allows you to signal our program to show your strong preference. Coming soon: "Overview: 2024 Application and Interview Season."
PITTSBURGH VISIT
Starting with the 2023 ERAS cycle, we added an option for a PITTSBURGH VISIT. More information will be included in the forthcoming "Overview: 2024 Application and Interview Season."
We will accept applications through December 31, 2024.
- We do not have a minimum Board Examination score requirement for acceptance into residency. We evaluate each application in its entirety and decisions are made on a variety of factors. We do give precedence to applicants with stronger performance on the exam and prefer individuals who passed their Boards on the first attempt.
- We accept international medical graduates as residents. We are looking for the most capable residents available, and they come from a variety of backgrounds. We do give preference to applicants who have had clinical experience within the last three years.
- We accept COMLEX scores for applications, but USMLE scores are required, even for graduates of osteopathic schools.
- We sponsor J1 and H1B visas.
- We do not have any one particular criterion for residency selection, but things that weigh favorably are: medical school involvement, research experience, publications, community service, and/or a strong medical school transcript. We recommend that you provide explanation for any extraordinary information within your application. For instance, if you have failed a medical school course, you should briefly discuss in your personal statement any extenuating circumstances that may have contributed to the situation.
