Message from the Chief Residents

"A group photo of the chief residents, Doctors Cheng, Nanez, and Williams outside"Hello everyone! Welcome to the UPMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. We could not be more excited to show you our fantastic department.

We have 20-22 anesthesiology residents per year who rotate through half a dozen hospitals in Pittsburgh alone, and many others are available for rotations throughout western Pennsylvania and across the world. We are a top NIH research institution for anesthesiology. Our flagship hospital in Oakland, UPMC Presbyterian/Montefiore, has over 1,500 beds and is the fifth largest hospital in the country ranked by Becker’s Hospital Review. We have several tertiary referral hospitals such as UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, which manages over 14,000 births a year, and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, a major transplant and cardiac facility for the region that is ranked No. 8 on the US News & World Report Best Children's Hospitals Honor Roll.

Despite housing such a large anesthesiology center, our department remains exceptionally close-knit. Our residents come from all over the world, bringing together a powerfully diverse and well-rounded group. Our faculty remain heavily involved in our success and are engaged in our learning both inside and outside the operating room.

As it was for many of you, it was this enormous wealth of opportunity that brought us to UPMC. The scale of training here is truly unparalleled - 10 clinical fellowship programs are offered as well as an additional Clinical Investigator Track housed in our NIH T32 research program. Your training here is facilitated by an individualized mentorship program, where each resident is paired with a faculty mentor to help guide your career based on your own goals and ambitions.

Furthermore, the city of Pittsburgh could not be a more ideal location for residency training. In 2022, Bloomberg News ranked Pittsburgh as the most affordable city for housing, while the Economist ranked Pittsburgh as one of the most livable cities on the mainland. A very accessible city, there are numerous fantastic suburbs north and south of downtown offering a full spectrum of housing choices for both families and single residents. Pittsburgh is a historically industrial town that has undergone a tech renaissance. Numerous Fortune 500 companies are headquartered here - while the Penguins, Steelers, and Pirates have quite the fanbase for professional sports.

Blending a top-tier academic anesthesiology program with a major city and its hometown nature makes training in our unique program the very best! We hope you will consider our program for your training. In the words of Pittsburgh legend Mister Fred Rogers, “Won’t you be my neighbor?”

All the best,

Monique Cheng, MD
