The department offers world-class opportunities for advanced training in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology. The adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology service provides anesthetic care for over 2,000 adult cardiac surgical procedures per year at UPMC. The Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship is open to individuals who have successfully completed a four-year residency in anesthesiology and are board eligible or certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or have completed an accredited program in Canada. As required by the ABA, the duration of the fellowship is one year.
The Hepatic Transplantation Anesthesiology (HTA) Fellowship position is available at UPMC Presbyterian, a leading center of organ transplantation with an annual caseload of more than 200 transplants of the liver, small bowels, pancreas, and multiviscera. The HTA team is comprised of uniquely qualified anesthesiologists who pioneered and developed the field of transplantation anesthesiology, including founding of the International Liver Transplantation Society. This fellowship program provides a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing perioperative care, ample research opportunities, and collaboration of colleagues in surgery, hematology, and critical care medicine.
UPMC Presbyterian (PUH) has an extraordinarily busy neurosurgical service, performing over 4,000 cases per year. This translates into six to seven neurosurgical operating rooms daily. Clinical excellence in providing neuroanesthesiology care is the first goal of the fellowship. Individuals also interested in developing teaching and research skills will have ample opportunity to do so. Upon completion of the neuroanesthesiology fellowship, the anesthesiologist will be ready to enter academic practice or assume a leadership position in neuroanesthesiology within a non-academic group.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital(MWH) offers a CA-IV Fellowship in Obstetric Anesthesiology. MWH is one of the leading Womancare Centers in the country, with more than 9,000 obstetric deliveries annually. The program offers the fellow participation in state-of-the-art anesthetic care of low- and high-risk obstetrical patients, as well as opportunities in clinical and basic science research in the discipline.
The Pain Medicine Fellowship program is a truly multidisciplinary program with services ranging from pain rehabilitation to interventional therapies, affording the fellows opportunities to learn from work with psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and pain medicine physicians from other disciplines including neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. Productive research is encouraged and supported. An important objective of the Pain Medicine Fellowship program is to attract individuals with an interest in developing an academic career.
The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is designed to further develop clinical expertise in caring for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing a wide variety of surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. There are approximately 30,000 anesthetics performed yearly at the Children’s Hospital sites. It is among the oldest and most successful fellowships of its kind in America and it is one of the first Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowships to receive ACGME accreditation.
The Pediatric Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship program offers advanced training in the anesthetic management of patients with congenital heart disease and includes surgical and nonsurgical intervention, as well as critical care management.
Our Perioperative Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month, multidisciplinary, team-based training program focusing on both outpatient and inpatient perioperative management of patients at high risk for poor outcomes.
The Regional Anesthesiology & Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship Program comprises 12 months of subspecialty training for qualified physicians who have completed an anesthesiology residency. Preference is given to mature individuals with significant experience in regional anesthesia who are interested in becoming experts in acute pain and regional anesthesiology.
A sequential program track in our Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine and Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Programs is offered by the respective programs to train the next generation of leaders in the care of critically ill cardiac patients.
Our Obstetric Anesthesiology and Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Programs offer a two-year enhanced training program for unique candidates who are committed to a lifetime of excellence in the care of critically ill OB patients.
We offer sequential one-year fellowships in obstetric and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology, with the ability to tailor elective time and a longitudinal scholarly project towards the goal of becoming a leader in academic cardio-OB anesthesiology.
Our Regional & Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship is a one-year, instructor-level hybrid fellowship comprising advanced training in regional anesthesiology and obstetric anesthesiology.
The Clinical Investigator track combines a one-year clinical fellowship in Obstetric Anesthesiology with our NIH T32 research program and would be arranged on an individual basis.
