2017-2018 Chief Residents Announced

Our Recruitment and Selection Committee recently announced the Chief Residents for the upcoming 2017-2018 academic year:

  • Elizabeth Ungerman, MD, MS - Chief Resident: Elizabeth entered our program from Drexel University College of Medicine. She is a Pittsburgh native and earned her undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon and a Master’s degree in Pharmacology from Georgetown. Dr. Ungerman did an exemplary job this year as Junior Chief of Advocacy and was also very active in our residency recruitment efforts. Most recently, she organized a fundraiser for the Pediatric Burn Unit at UPMC Mercy. She has presented multiple times at the annual meetings of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP). Upon graduation, she plans to stay at UPMC to complete an adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship.
  • Daniel Mandell, MD - Associate Chief Resident: Dan entered our program from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine with an undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a Pittsburgh native. Dr. Mandell was very active this year as Junior Chief of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. He has two publications to his credit and multiple presentations at national meetings. Upon graduation, he will also be staying at UPMC for an adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship.
  • Nicole Verdecchia, MD - Associate Chief Resident: Nicole entered our program as an AOA graduate from Ohio State University School of Medicine with an undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She served a vital role this year as one of the Junior Chiefs for Recruitment. Dr. Verdecchia has three publications to her credit and many national presentations including ones at ASA, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA), and SOAP. She will begin a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC upon graduation.
