Congratulations to William Simmons, MD, who has been selected to receive the 2017 Oswald Nickens Physician of the Year award from the Gateway Medical Society (GMS). GMS, a component society of the National Medical Association, honors one or more physicians in Western PA annually whose clinical work and community contributions make them a great asset to the community. Dr. Simmons will receive this honor at the GMS Scholarship and Awards Gala on October 28th, 2017.

Congratulations to William Simmons, MD, who was one of three mentors in Gateway Medical Society’s Journey to Medicine Academic Mentorship Program (the other mentors were Anita Edwards, MD of Highmark and Jan Madison, MD of Jefferson Hospital) selected to receive the Jefferson Award for Volunteerism, the highest award for volunteerism in the nation, in June 2016 in Washington, DC.
Congratulations to William Simmons, MD, who received the National Medical Association (NMA) Scroll of Merit “in recognition of his leadership and promotion of wellness, healthcare equality, medical education, and efforts towards increasing the pipeline of minority students entering medicine.”
Dr. Simmons received the award, the NMA’s highest honor for merit, at the Annual NMA Convention and Scientific Assembly in Los Angeles, CA on July 30, 2016. The honor was followed by a “Special Congressional Commendation of Recognition” of the award.
A new six-minute documentary showcases the Journey to Medicine (JTM) Academic Mentorship Program and a few words from the program’s students and Gateway Medical Society President and department faculty member William Simmons, MD.
A half hour PBS/ WQED Public Cable TV special called “Journey to Medicine” was filmed in Pittsburgh and focused on Gateway Medical Society’s mentorship program. Department physician Dr. William Simmons is currently the President and Chairman of the Board of GMS.
Dr. Simmons was featured on the show discussing the Journey to Medicine mentorship program. The show also featured cameos of African American medical students and staff at the University of Pittsburgh discussing their path to medicine and insights on the topic.
