University of Pittsburgh alumni Charles Chabal, III and Sharon W. Chabal have pledged an exceptionally generous $1.5 million donation to support the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research.

Sharon is a 1980 graduate of the Pitt School of Nursing, and Charles earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1982 and graduated from our Anesthesiology Residency Program in 1985.

The Safar Center for Resuscitation Research is dedicated to discovering, advancing, and promoting methods to prevent premature death and reduce disability caused by traumatic brain injury, cardiac arrest, and other forms of acute brain injury. Founded in 1979 by the late Dr. Peter Safar, our department’s inaugural chair, the Center was originally known as the International Resuscitation Research Center before being renamed in his honor.

Today, Safar Center investigators span multiple departments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC, including Critical Care Medicine, Neurological Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pediatrics, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Through this multidisciplinary collaboration, the Center continues to drive innovation and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.
