Phillip Adams, DO, FASA, Associate Professor, has been appointed Co‑Editor‑in‑Chief of the Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine (JEPM) following an open selection process conducted by the journal and the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA). Dr. Adams joins Lara Zisblatt, EdD, MA, PMME, Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology, to lead the journal for a five‑year term and will report directly to the SEA Board of Directors.
Dr. Adams brings extensive experience to the role: he served as an associate editor for six years and was a peer reviewer for JEPM prior to that. He succeeds Co‑Editors-in-Chief David M. Broussard, MD, and Jeffrey Berger, MD, MBA, who recently stepped down from their roles with the journal.
"I am honored and thrilled to take on the role of Co-Editor‑in‑Chief for the Journal of Education in Perioperative Medicine," Dr. Adams said. "Throughout my time as Program Director for UPMC Anesthesiology Residency, I’ve seen firsthand how focused, clinically grounded education transforms trainees into confident, patient‑centered clinicians. I’m excited to bring that experience to the journal - supporting rigorous, practical scholarship, fostering mentorship for early‑career educators, and encouraging innovation in perioperative teaching that directly improves patient care."
He added: "While our clinical demands are high, it's imperative that we not lose sight of the importance of academics and advancing education for the next generation of anesthesiologists. A culture of curiosity and innovation is our best hope to continue thriving as a specialty."
Dr. Adams’s appointment is expected to continue JEPM’s emphasis on practical, mentorship‑focused educational scholarship and to advance initiatives that translate perioperative education research into improved clinical training and patient outcomes.
