We are pleased to recognize the educational legacy of Doreen Soliman, MD, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, as she steps down from her long-held role as Residency Site Coordinator at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Soliman joined our faculty in 1998 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 in recognition of her deep commitment to resident education. Over her distinguished career, she has played an integral role in shaping the academic experiences of medical students, residents, fellows, and student registered nurse anesthetists. A respected educator and mentor, Dr. Soliman has developed and implemented a variety of pediatric anesthesiology subspecialty curricula and has been deeply involved in all aspects of resident education and evaluation.
Her many contributions include:
- Leadership in implementing Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Milestones through her long-standing service on our Residency Evaluation and Competence Committee.
- Coordination of mock oral examinations and development of pediatric anesthesiology key word sessions to prepare residents for board certification.
- Initiation and facilitation of regular resident case discussions and other interactive educational formats.
Organization of simulations, journal clubs, and other critical components of resident education as a senior member of our Anesthesiology Resident Education Committee.
Dr. Soliman’s excellence as an educator has been recognized with awards for excellence in resident teaching from both our department (2002, 2007, 2011, 2017, 2019) as well as Allegheny Health Network, including their UPMC Children’s Anesthesiology Faculty of the Year Award for 2024-2025. She was named to Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Best Doctors” List annually from 2016-2019.
Dr. Soliman will remain as faculty and stay involved in education, continuing to lead initiatives such as mock orals, resident case discussions, and problem-based learning discussions.

Alexander Praslick, MD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, has now assumed the role of Residency Site Coordinator. In this position, Dr. Praslick will oversee the coordination of the ACGME-required three-month pediatric anesthesiology rotation, ensuring continuity and excellence in resident training at UPMC Children’s.
We extend our gratitude to Dr. Soliman for her many years of dedication to graduate medical education in anesthesiology and look forward to her further contributions as we welcome Dr. Alex Praslick to this role.
