Department of Anesthesiology

Message from the Chief Residents

Welcome to the UPMC Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program! We would like to present to you what we believe is a premier anesthesiology training program and hope that your interest brings you to visit us! Located in what has been named the “Most Livable City” by The Economist, UPMC offers second to none clinical training, an abundance of research opportunities, outstanding mentorship, and the flexibility for well-rounded Pittsburgh living.

The foundation of our residency program is our comprehensive and diverse clinical training. With over 20 hospital sites in Western Pennsylvania and internationally, residents have the opportunity to contribute to over 300,000 anesthetics annually. The majority of these anesthetics are provided at dedicated specialty hospitals, including Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC. Residents can also gain international training extending from medical missions in Asia, South America, and Africa to our own transplant center in Italy. These unique experiences are available to us because of the department’s commitment to resident teaching and experience. In accordance, our education remains a top priority, with a system-wide understanding that academic time is protected. This includes weekly class-specific lectures, bi-weekly problem-based learning discussions, simulation experiences at WISER, frequent mock oral examinations, and teaching opportunities at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. UPMC’s dedication to our education is reflected by resident performance on national board exams and consistently active resident participation in local, state, and national conferences and organizations.

UPMC offers every ACGME-accredited fellowship, along with a multitude of non-accredited fellowships. Exposure to complex cases is unparalleled. Our graduates secure nationally-recognized fellowships, fantastic opportunities in private practice, and leadership roles in academia. Year after year, our graduates set a new precedent for success and reiterate that our brand of anesthesiology is a commodity valued by prospective future employers.

The research experience at UPMC is limitless. An abundance of research opportunities is available in every subspecialty under highly-respected and published mentors. There are even opportunities for research and development in engineering! UPMC’s commitment to resident research experiences is reflected by generous financial support and protected non-clinical time. PGY-4 residents can dedicate elective time to research, with most of them completing research projects that receive regional or national accolades. UPMC also boasts a healthy representation at the annual American Society of Anesthesiologists meeting, with dozens of residents in attendance every year, including the entire PGY-1 class as part of their one-month Anesthesiology Professional Practice rotation—all paid for by the program.

Let’s not forget about Pittsburgh! Pittsburgh has been voted as America’s “Most Livable City” six times since 2000. It also has been voted by Zagat magazine as the “#1 Food City in the United States” for 2015, “one of the friendliest cities in America” by Travel + Leisure, and one of “America’s Most Affordable Large Cities” by U.S. News & World Report. Pittsburgh offers a wide array of entertainment, including arts, theater, music, festivals, brewing companies, and sports – it’s the home of The Stanley Cup for the second year in a row along with six Super Bowl rings! Regardless of your personal interests, Pittsburgh has something for you! It is also within close proximity to multiple state parks and national landmarks. As Pittsburgh continues to flourish, our residents are provided with a great living opportunity that exceeds expectations!

Thank you for your interest in UPMC and Pittsburgh! We assure you that you will find our program provides its residents with exceptional experiences that mold trainees into leaders, driven pioneers, and physicians that are dedicated to patient care. If you have any questions or would like more information on life as a UPMC resident, please feel free to contact us! We hope to see you on the interview trail!
